Common Auto Body Fixes: Headlights, Tailgates, Mirrors, and Door Handles
Not every auto body issue involves a major collision. Some of the most common repairs are smaller, everyday fixes, a cracked headlight lens, a dented tailgate, a broken mirror, or a door handle that no longer works properly. Each of these has its own set of considerations.
Headlight Replacement
Headlights can be damaged by minor impacts, road debris, or simply degrade over time as the plastic lens yellows and clouds with UV exposure. Depending on the vehicle, headlight replacement can range from a straightforward bolt-in swap to a more involved process if the housing is integrated with other body panels.
Tailgate Repair and Replacement
Tailgates take a lot of abuse, and because they are a large, load-bearing panel with moving hinges, latches, and often backup cameras or sensors integrated into them, damage can affect more than just appearance. Depending on severity, a damaged tailgate might be straightened and repainted, or replaced entirely.
Mirror Replacement
Side mirrors are frequently damaged in tight parking situations or minor collisions. Modern mirrors often include integrated turn signals, blind spot warning sensors, and heating elements, which means a simple-looking mirror replacement can involve more electrical connections than older designs.
Door Handles and Locks
Door handle and lock issues range from purely mechanical wear to electrical problems in vehicles with power locks and keyless entry systems. Diagnosing whether an issue is mechanical or electrical is usually the first step, since the two require very different repair approaches.
Why These “Small” Repairs Still Matter
While none of these repairs are as involved as full collision work, they still affect a vehicle’s function and, in some cases, safety, a headlight that is not properly aimed or a tailgate that will not latch securely are not purely cosmetic issues.
